Q1 2013 Bank Roll Update

Hey Gang -

It’s been a little while since I posted, I’ve been busy with work and have found it difficult to find time to post.  Here’s a quick snapshot of how I fared during the first quarter of 2013 (Jan 1 to Mar 31).

Q1 2013 Poker Stats

Observations…  My goal for Q1 was to cash in 40% of the tournaments that I played in…  I played in 13 tournaments, and I cashed in 4 of them.  My calculator spits out that this is a 30.1% cash rate (just missed it)…  I spent 47+ hours during the first three months of the year and made $91.00  that’s a whopping $1.93 per hour.  I’d make more flipping Whoppers, but I’m having a lot more fun being a student of the game.  But at least it was positive and not negative.

Honestly I think that I could have won more, on two occasions I made very generous final table chop offers with a gigantic stack against some very small stack contenders.  So perhaps that’s another leak that I should seek to fix?  On my two other occasions though I feel that karma came back and revisited as I was a medium/small stack and was included in a chop.  So I feel what goes around comes around.

My Goal for the second quarter is to maximize winnings by continuing to focus on cashing, but aiming for first, second or third place money, and not just squeaking in.  What are your thoughts, critiques, suggestions?

WSOP Satellite Event

Hey gang, this is a repost of Ryan’s message, with a few more details, and a link to go to if you want to sign up for the event…  Hope to see you all there!

I’m excited to post that the WSOP 2013 Schedule has been announced, here’s a link to the article: WSOP Link.  We have not officially decided to have a WSOP league this year and it’s starting to get a little to late to do so.  We could have a mini-series or have a single larger buy-in tournament to send someone to an event in this years WSOP, please let me know if you would be interested.

Attention, we changed the Blind Timer from 20 Minutes to 30 Minutes, to give a little more play!  Thanks for those that contributed this suggestion!  For more information or to register for this event, click here: WSOP Poker Satellite Event

Charity Poker Tournament

Hey gang, the Waynesville Quarterback Club is at it again.  They are holding two great self-contained tournaments on March 9th, 2013 at Noon and 6PM.  I hope you can stop by if you get a chance, below are the details…

TEXAS HOLD-EM TOURNAMENT Waynesville Boosters *NO QUALIFYING AND NO RE-BUYS* This is the best Tournament format and bang for your buck around. We have used this same format for our last several events and they were a big success.

Two “DEEP-STACK” Tournaments on SATURDAY March 9th at the Waynesville American Legion (174 S. 4th Street). Times will be at Noon and 6:00pm. Live action will also be available all afternoon and evening to tournament players. There will be ONE $100 buy-in and you will receive $10,000 in chips. Blinds will progress slowly so you will not be rushed. We will pay the top 20% of players from each tournament. Example: With 30 players the top six will all cash. You are welcome/encouraged to participate in both tournaments.

A “DEEP-STACK” Tournament is still No Limit Texas Hold-em but is designed to give you a large amount of chips to enable you to play longer and possibly play more hands. Of course if you choose to be aggressive and push them all in the middle they can still go quickly.  We are hosting two separate tournaments on the same day and will pay the winners after each tournament. No more waiting around to get paid or investing an entire weekend. By paying the top 20% one in every five players will earn money back. Win or lose in the first tournament we encourage you to play in both. We also plan to have multiple live action tables in progress with multiple poker options for your enjoyment between and during the two “main” tournaments.

GREAT ODDS TO WIN – GREAT VALUE FOR YOUR $ – GOOD TIME FOR ALL

Hope to see all of you there – PLEASE help us spread the word to all the poker players you know! (501c3 licensed charity)

Pot Odds Quiz

I thought about how to make this week’s post interactive, so I thought this might be interesting, part of this was taken from an on-line discussion I was recently introduced to on Facebook, so I decided to repost the following question to you all and get your thoughts and comments…

Also, courtesy of Last Call Poker League, I thought I would re-post this handy outs/odds chart for your viewing pleasure.

Poker Outs Chart

Blinds are 500/1000, table is 7 handed, you limp in early position with AcTc (clubs), everyone else folds except the two blinds leaving 3,000 chips in the middle. The flop comes out Jc6c2s (for the purposes of this quiz we are not calculating any type of implied odds or the stack the SB has behind).

  1. How many outs could we have?
  2. How many outs should we count on?
  3. What is our percentage to win the hand at this point?
    1. The SB leads out with a bet on that flop and the BB folds.
  4. What is the maximum bet we should call and still have the proper pot odds to call?

Please post your answers, or discussion points…

January Bankroll Update

I had a singular goal in the first quarter of this year, and that was to cash in 40% of the tournaments that I play in.  As noted in that post, the danger with that strategy is that I could just squeak into the money, and I might not have a finish as deep into the money as desired.  Sometimes what you aim for is exactly what you get.  I can’t say that I’m 100% happy with my results in January, but it is an improvement over November and December of last year as well.

In January I played in 5 poker tournaments, and I cashed in 3 of them.  That’s placing in the money 60% of the time, which I’m happy with.  I slowed down the bleeding on my losses, and I worked a lot on my game.  The part that I’m not so happy with is the profit side of the equation.  I made a whopping $10.00 after 23 hours and 35 minutes of work at the tables, that’s right I made a HUGE $0.42 per hour, and loved every minute of it.  Overall bankroll at this point is down $194.00 on my total of $500.00 so I’m sitting with a balance of $306.00

In February I’m going to concentrate on a little deeper finish, but I do see this as positive traction.  As always I welcome your comments!

Commerce Casino in Action

Hey gang, just wanted to stop for a second to make a very brief post.  While in LA on a business trip, I mixed a little bit of pleasure with business.  I stopped by the Commerce Casino & Poker Room, during their LA Poker Classic Series that is running right now.  They were knee-deep in the middle of a 50K Guaranteed Tourney, that was a $335 buy in (if I recall correctly)

I took a panoramic photo of the enormous poker room (largest poker room I’ve ever seen, short of the WSOP setup at the Rio Convention Center that is just temporary of course).  I just got it posted to Facebook, when a nice young security guard stopped by and asked me if I had taken a photo or a video, and if I had to remove it from my phone.  He offered to take my picture in front of the statue out front, but reminded me that photo’s inside the casino was off-limits.  He watched me delete the photo off my phone.  I didn’t volunteer that I had already uploaded it to the cloud.

Here’s the shot…
